Sulfur is the more electronegative element. The sulphur atom gains electrons to attain the noble gas configuration.

The carbon atom partially shares the valence electrons with the sulphur atom to form a carbon-sulphur covalent bond.

C is oxidized in the redox reaction because carbon is the less electronegative element and has a tendency to partially lose its four valence electrons to attain the noble gas configuration. It has the capacity to lose electrons and form positive ions.

S2 is reduced in the redox reaction because sulfur is the more electronegative element. It has the capacity to gain electrons and form negative ions.

S2 has a tendency to attract electrons to attains the noble gas configuration. The carbon atom shares four electrons with the sulfur atom to form a carbon-sulfur covalent bond.

The equation for the reaction of C with S2 is as:
