Chapter 15, Problem 51A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The reason why antifreeze used in a car could also be called as antiboil has to be explained.

Concept Introduction: Colligative properties depend on the number of solute particles in the solution.

The number of particles that the solute will dissociate upon mixing with the solvent is represented by “i”

Answer to Problem 51A

Antifreeze lowers the freezing point of liquids that are based on water. It also increases the boiling point of water on doing so. Therefore, antifreeze is also called as antiboil.

Explanation of Solution

Antifreeze is a mixture that is used to attain freezing-point depression for cold environments.

Ethylene glycol is used as antifreeze in car radiator during the winter because of having lower freezing point than water. The antifreeze (pure or mixed with water) has lower specific heat than that of pure water. In summer, water serves as a coolant in radiator of car. When temperature of the coolant increases to its boiling point, the system starts to boil over.

Antifreeze lowers the freezing point of liquids that are based on water. It also increases the boiling point of water on doing so. Therefore, antifreeze is also called as antiboil.

Conclusion

Antifreeze lowers the freezing point of liquids that are based on water. It also increases the boiling point of water on doing so. Therefore, antifreeze is also called as antiboil.
