More of the solid interacts with solvent particles on increasing surface area. Therefore, rate of dissolution increases.

Explanation of Solution

Surface area of a solid is increased when area of surface which can interact with outer surroundings is increased. It can be done by breaking the solid into smaller pieces.

When the surface area is increased the solvent particles can interact from more sites. Therefore, the rate of dissolution increases.

Conclusion

Increase in surface area of a solid increases its dissolution rate.
