Question
Chapter 15.2, Problem 12LC
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: To determine why hydrates easily lose water when heated and regain water exposed to moisture.
Concept Introduction: A crystalline salt molecule that is loosely bound to a specific amount of water molecules is known as a hydrated salt.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 12LC
Force holding the water molecules is weak.
Explanation of Solution
The dot inside the formula denotes the bonding of the two components. The water may evaporate when heated, leaving an anhydrous salt. This procedure can be reversed. The hydrate will regenerate when water is added to the anhydrous salt. Due to the weak forces binding the water molecules in hydrates, the water could easily be lost and recovered back.
