Concept introduction:
According to Huckel’s rule, a molecule orb an ion or bradical will be stable and aromatic if it is planar, cyclic and conjugated (4n+2) electrons. For a cyclic system to be aromatic both conditions are to be satisfied. If only one of the conditions is satisfied the specie will not be aromatic, becomes less stable and cannot be synthesized.
To explain:
The observation that cyclodecapentaene fulfills one of the criteria for aromaticity but not the other and has resisted all attempts at synthesis.

- 1, 6-Methanonaphthalene has an interesting 1H NMR spectrum in which the eight hydrogens around the perimeter absorb at 6.9 to 7.3 δ, while the two CH2 protons absorb at -0.5 δ. Tell whether it is aromatic, and explain its NMR spectrum.arrow_forwardThe compound MON-0585 is a non-toxic, biodegradable larvicide that is highly selective against mosquito larvae. Synthesize MON-0585 using either benzene or phenol as a source of the aromatic rings.arrow_forwardCalculate the number of degrees of unsaturation in a compound ofmolecular formula C4H6, and propose possible structures ?arrow_forward
- Cycloheptatrienyl radical (C7H7∙) contains a cyclic, completely conjugated system of π electrons. Is it aromatic? Is it antiaromatic? Explain.arrow_forwardReaction of iodoethane with CN- yields a small amount of isonitrile, CH3CH2N≡C, along with the nitrile CH3CH2N≡N, as the major product. Write electron-dot structures for both products, assign formal charges as necessary, and propose mechanisms to account for their formation.arrow_forwardUse the 1H NMR and IR spectra given below to identify the structures of two isomers (A and B) having molecular formula C4H8O2.arrow_forward
- 3. Cyclopropenones are described as having aromatic character. How would you account for this, given that the ring contains three π-electrons?arrow_forwardwhat is the bond line formula of C6H12O2 with respect to given IR spectra and NMRarrow_forwardStarting with benzene, toluene, or phenol as the only sources of aromatic rings, show how to synthesize the following. - Aromatic heterocyclic chemistry: State whether the following drugs are aromatic heterocycles and if they follow the 4 aromaticity rules (unsaturation, (4n + 2)pi electrons, cyclic and flat/planar), NAME ANY HETEROCYCLES. Assume in all syntheses that mixtures of ortho-para products can be separated into the desired isomer. Q.) p-Dichlorobenzenearrow_forwardWhy isn't this compound aromatic? Doesn't it fit the 4n+2 rule where there is 6 pi electrons? Or is it not planar, which is why it is not aromatic?arrow_forward
