Chapter 16, Problem 16.56QP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The pH of a 0.30M solution of a weak base is 10.66, its Kb value has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Base ionization constant Kb:

It is the equilibrium constant for the ionization of a base.

The ionization of a weak base B is,

  B(aq)+H2O(l)BH(aq)++OH(aq)-

The equilibrium expression for the above reaction is given below.

Kb=[BH+][OH-][B]

pOH of a solution is the negative logarithm of the molar concentration of hydroxide ion concentration.

  pOH=-log[OH-]

Concentration of hydroxide ion [OH-]=10-pOH

pH of a solution is the negative of the base -10 logarithm of the hydronium ion or hydrogen ion concentration.

  pH=-log[H3O+]

  • pH+pOH=14

ICE (reaction initial concentration equilibrium) table is mainly used to calculate the value of K for a reaction. This table contains the concentration of reactant and product in various stage of reaction.
