Going Nuclear. Experiments have been performed with the nuclear localization sequence (NLS) of nucleoplasmin. In each case, a string of amino acids was added to pyruvate kinase, a glycolytic enzyme normally found in the cytosol. The sequence of each added string of amino acids is shown using single-letter amino acid designations. Consult the single-letter amino acid code table (Table 3-2, page 45) if you feel it is necessary. Many alanines in a row are denoted by (A)n, where n is the number of alanines. The following results were obtained:
- (a) What sort of NLS does nucleoplasmin appear to have, based on these results? Explain your answer.
- (b) How does your conclusion about the NLS of nucleoplasmin compare to the NLS for SV40 large T antigen?
