Chapter 16, Problem 20P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The reason for using GLUT2 as transporter for glucose by the pancreas should be determined.
Concept introduction:
The pancreas is located at the back of the stomach and behind the stomach. It functions as an endocrine gland as well as an exocrine gland. Many enzymes and juices are secreted by the enzymes during the digestive process. Moreover, GLUT2, transporter for glucose, is produced by the pancreas.

BIOCHEMISTRY. Could glycerol be used to regenerate the OAA for maintenance of TCA cycle activity? Yes or No? Explain.
Draw Gluconeogenesis. Please make sure to state all the enzymes and co-factors for each step of the pathway.
Help filling in the blanks:
The malate aspartate shuttle plays many roles in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. Malate can be transferred into the cytosol and interconverted in one enzymatic step to produce [oxaloacetate/glucose/PEP/pyruvate] for use in the pathway of [glycolysis/gluconeogenesis]. A product of the urea cycle, derived from aspartate, can also be converted to malate in one enzymatic step and shuttled into the mitochondria so that the urea cycle product can be used in [fatty acid synthesis/the citric acid cycle/β-oxidation]. The amino group from aspartate can be transferred to [oxalacetate/malate/fumarate/pyruvate/a- ketoglutarate] to form glutamate, which is then transported into the mitochondria. In fact many amino acids are transaminated in this way to form glutamate in the cytosol. In this way, incoming amino acids from the bloodstream can be shuttled into the liver mitochondria as glutamate for conversion by glutamate dehydrogenase to [glutamate/a-ketoglutarate…

Short peptides such as legumain stabilization and activity modulation (LSAM) domain and αvβ3 integrin could enhance the activity of AEP. LSAM domain known as the prodomain of AEP blocks substrate binding before activation. This prodomain has a helical structure and two independent peptides. One is an activation peptide (AP, K287 to N323), and the other is a LSAM domain. LSAM domain remains even after AP is cleaved and released from protease at neutral pH via electrostatic interaction. AEP without LSAM domain has a lower melting temperature than AEP with LSAM domain [77, 117]. Another short peptide, αvβ3 integrin, can directly interact with AEP, and after forming a complex, the optimal pH for AEP activity is increased from 5.5 to 6.0. It indicates that αvβ3 binding could induce conformational stabilization of AEP accompanied by deprotonated C189. αvβ3 does not directly interact with the AEP active site; however, AEP docks to the αvβ3 RGD-binding site…arrow_forward
