Concept introduction: Gluconeogenesis is a series of chemical reactions in which glucose is synthesized from non-carbohydrate precursors such as pyruvate, oxaloacetate glycerol, and lactate. It occurs in the liver and kidney cortex of higher animals. Glycolysis is the series of reactions that breaks down one molecule of glucose into two molecules of pyruvate molecules with the net production of 2 ATP and 2 NADH molecules.
