Concept explainers
To determine:
The role of the immune system in the development of type I diabetes.
Concept introduction:
Type 1 diabetes, also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes, is a chronic condition in which the pancreas stops producing insulin. Insulin is a peptide hormone required by the cells for uptake of glucose from the blood to produce energy. This hormone helps in maintaining the blood sugar level.
To determine:
A strategy that could be used to protect young children from developing an autoimmune reaction, and subsequently type I diabetes, after a viral infection.
Concept introduction:
The type I diabetes is a type of autoimmune disease. The cells of immune cells are not able to identify normal pancreatic cells like other body cells and develop antibodies against the pancreatic

- Discuss the role of immunosuppressive therapy in organ transplantation and in the treatment of autoimmune diseases.arrow_forwardThe "Open Window" Theory of exercise and vulnerability to illness is based on all of the following observations, except: Group of answer choices Decreased Natural Killer Cell numbers and activity Decreased nasal and salivary IgA Increased cytokines Increased T-cell numbers and functionarrow_forwardDistinguish between the innate and adaptive immune systems in terms of cell types used, how they recognize pathogens, and how they protect animals from infection. Predict how perturbations in immune cells or immune responses influence innate immune system function. Predict how perturbations in immune cells or immune responses influence adaptive immune system function. Explain how traditional and mRNA vaccines work using the terms: antibody, antigen, B-cells, helper T-cells, plasma cells, and memory B-cells. Predict whether an infection or perturbations in B- and T- cell development might predispose someone to develop an autoimmune disease.arrow_forward
