Chapter 16.1, Problem 11SSC
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The relation between the speed of a chemical reaction and the spontaneity of the reaction needs to be explained.

Concept introduction:

Spontaneity of a chemical reaction is related to change in free energy (ΔG). If ΔG is negative, the reaction is spontaneous under the conditions specified. If ΔG is positive, the reaction is not spontaneous.

Expert Solution & Answer

Answer to Problem 11SSC

Spontaneity has no relation with the speed of reaction.

Explanation of Solution

Rate of reaction is not related to spontaneity of a reaction. If a reaction has negative ΔG value, it does not indicates that reaction is fast or slow also the magnitude of ΔG does not affect rate. ΔG indicates only the natural tendency for a reaction or process to proceed.

Conclusion

The sign of ΔG indicates the reaction is spontaneous or not.
