Carbohydrates are the polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or in other words the substances that give polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones are called carbohydrates. They can be classified on the basis of number of carbon atoms and referred as triose, tetrose, pentose and hexose when it contains three, four, five and six carbon atoms respectively.
