Textbook Question
Chapter 17, Problem 21ICA
There is currently an effort in the United States to replace incandescent light bulbs with more energy-efficient technologies, including compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEOs). The lumen (Im] is the SI unit of luminous flux, a measure of the perceived power of light. Luminous flux is adjusted to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light.
To test the power usage, you run an experiment and measure the following data. Create a proper plot of these data, with electrical consumption (EC) on the ordinate.

In the United States, electricity is sold using the SI units of kilowatt (kW) or megawatt (MW), and fuel for power
generation stations is generally purchased using English units, e.g., British thermal unit (Btu), gallon (gal), and ton. An industrial power plant has an average annual load of 100 MW (electrical). If the overall thermal efficiency is 33% (based on HHV), what is the annual cost of fuel if the plant is fired with (a) natural gas, (b) No. 2 fuel oil, and (c) bituminous coal? Use the data from Tables 2.2, 2.7, and 2.13. Assume the cost of natural gas is $5/million Btu, the cost of No. 2 fuel oil is $3/gal, and the cost of bituminous coal is $60/ton (1 ton = 2000 lbm)
On April 20, 2010, the DeepWater Horizon oil drilling operation exploded, causing the largest marine oil spill ever recorded. When estimating the volume of an oil spill, if there are traces of color in the oil slick, it is estimated at 150 nanometers[nm] thick and a ratio of 1.4 liters per hectare[L/ha]. What is this ratio in gallons per square kilometer [gal/km2]?
The ratio is ___ gal/km2.
Suppose you're converting a bill of materials for machining feedstock from the British gravitational (U.S. system) of units to International System (SI) units. Your goal is to have all of the material quantities in kilograms. Your bill of materials lists values for required weights of brass rod in pounds. To convert to these values to kilograms you first you divide by gravitational acceleration in feet per second squared to get a mass in slugs, then convert slugs to kilograms using standard conversion factors.

The estimated usage is 3 hours per day , at a cost of $0.11 per kilowatt-hour . Based on energy cost alone - not considering the cost to replace any light bulbs and not considering any changes in energy cost with time - how much money in dollars would this household have saved over a 66-year time span (from 1955 to 2021) by changing from incandescent to LED bulbs?arrow_forward

Hooke's law states that the force (F, in newtons) applied to a spring is equal to the stiffness of the spring (k, in newtons per meter) times the displacement {x, in meters): F= kx. ;Chapter 10, Problem 161CA, Refer to the Worksheet shown, set up to calculate the displacement of a spring. Hooke's law states Cell A3 contains a data validation list of springs. The stiffness (cell 83) and maximum displacement (cell C3) values are found using a VLOOKUP function linked to the table shown at the right side of the worksheet.
