How does the arrangement of particles in a gas differ from the arrangements in liquids and solids?
The difference between arrangement of particles in a gas and the arrangements in liquids and solids.
Answer to Problem 5RQ
The arrangement of particles in a gas is away from each other while in liquids and solids, the particles are close to each other.
Explanation of Solution
There are three phases of matter. The phases are solid, liquid, and gas. The phases are different because of the arrangement and movement of molecules.
The solid phase has all of its molecules arranged in a three-dimensional structure. The intermolecular forces of attraction are strong. So, molecules do not move and are close to each other.
In the liquid phase, a three-dimensional structure is not present but intermolecular forces of attraction are present. The forces are not that strong but can keep the molecules close to each other.
In the gas phase, a three-dimensional structure is not present. The intermolecular forces of attraction are almost negligible. So, the molecules of the gas are not close to each other. They move randomly.
Conclusion:
Therefore, the arrangement of particles in a gas is away from each other while in liquids and solids, the particles are close to each other.
