The dissociation of an acid can be given as

  HA + H2OA- + H3O+

The relationship between pH and Ka can be given as

  Ka = [H+][A-] / [HA]pKa= -log KapH = pKa = -logKa

The dissociation of a base can be given as

  B + H2OBH+ + OH-

The relationship between pH and Kb can be given as

  Kb = [BH+][OH-] / [B]pKb= -log KbpH = pKb = -logKb

The Ka and Kb are related to each other through the ion constant of water.

  Kw= Ka× Kb

As Ka and Kb are equal, if one increases, the other decreases.

The larger Ka value gives the lower pH and the larger Kb value gives the higher pH.
