HIV belongs to the class of retrovirus. All viruses contain DNA as genetic material except retrovirus. A coat with spikes of fatty material that surrounds the HIV particle is known as the viral envelope. HIV spreads through sharing needles, sexual contact, and from mother to baby during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding.
