Chapter 18, Problem 22A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: The two aspects through which oxidation-reduction reactions are balanced needs to be explained.

Concept Introduction: By transfer of electrons, oxidation-reduction reactions are characterized. The transfer occurs to form ions. Oxidation reaction is caused by losing electrons and reduction caused by gaining electrons.

Answer to Problem 22A

By balancing charge and number of elements present in reactant and product side, oxidation-reduction reactions are balanced.

Explanation of Solution

To balance oxidation-reduction reaction, first separate the half reaction that means oxidation and reduction reaction. In a reduction half-reaction, electrons are placed on the reactant side and in oxidation half-reaction; the electrons are shown in the product side. Balance both charge and elements in both sides. After that add the half-reactions and omits the identical species that appear on both sides.

Conclusion

An oxidizing agent gains electrons and a reducing agent lose electrons in a redox reaction.
