The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is a division of the peripheral nervous system. It consists of smooth muscles and glands and can influence the function of internal organs. The ANS is subdivided into the parasympathetic division and sympathetic division. These divisions perform impressively different functions, but they are considered as complementary instead of antagonistic.
