Chapter 19, Problem 11P

(a)

Summary Introduction

To calculate:

The rate of consumption of glucose and production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate).

Introduction:

In the heart muscle of rat 90% of the ATP needs are fulfilled by oxidative phosphorylation. The oxidation of glucose produces ATP, NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), and pyruvate. The pyruvate is then oxidized in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. ATP and NADH generated transfers electron to the electron carriers in the electron transport chain.

(b)

Summary Introduction

To calculate:

The time required to turn over cellular pool of ATP.

Introduction:

ATP is also referred to as currency of cell and is involved in the energy transfer. It provides energy to the chemical reaction and drives them in favorable direction.
