If you suspected that heterozygous carriers of a particular disease gene had a selective advantage in resisting a type of infection, how would you go about testing that hypothesis?
To determine: The way for testing of the hypothesis that the heterozygous carriers of a particular disease may have a differential advantage in resisting a particular type of infection.
Introduction: Allele refers to a pair of genes present on a chromosome. Alleles can exist as homozygous or heterozygous pairs. Heterozygous is a term used when different alleles of particular genes are present.
Explanation of Solution
Genetic testing will help in gathering information or evidence concerning the hypothesis that the frequency of an allele of a specific genome is advantageous over the other in a given population.
In order to find out whether a particular gene is responsible for causing disease, has an advantage over the other, genetic testing is performed. In this type of testing, various samples of both the indigenous and non-indigenous population are collected and analyzed. The survival rate and reproduction rate of both of the populations are analyzed.
Another way is to conduct experiments on model organisms that are heterozyogous and homozygous carriers. Expose the heterozygous and homozygous carriers of both the populations to a particular disease, and then analyze both the groups for their survival and reproduction rates.
Hence, genetic testing and experimentation on model organisms are ways for testing the hypothesis that heterozygous carriers for a specific disease had a selective advantage in infection certain type of infection.

- Have you ever heard of anthrax disease? Does it have different effects on Humans than livestock species? If so, what are those differences? and give a cite source where you find the answerarrow_forwardCan you tell me about a scientist that advanced our knowledge of influenza?arrow_forwardIn a recent influenza epidemic, physicians were utilizing a rapid diagnostic test to determine which patients were infected with influenza type A, type B, or not infected with influenza virus. Such a test was not available in the massive 1918 outbreak that killed millions of people around the globe. How might the availability of such a test have impacted that outbreak, and why?arrow_forward

He is using three genotypes of corn and growing them in greenhouses under different temperatures (each genotype is grown under all temperatures) and measuring susceptibility to the disease. Draw a diagram with norms of reaction showing that the three genotypes respond differently to temperature in terms of disease susceptibility.arrow_forwardHow could you prove that an epidemic of a given infectious disease was occurring?arrow_forward
- Which of these statements about the virulence of rabbit myxoma virus is TRUE?A. Rabbit myxoma virus needed to become less virulent so it could coexist with its rabbit hosts.B. Directional selection favored a coevolutionary escalation where resistance evolved in rabbits and less virulence evolved in the virus.C. Rabbit myxoma virus became less virulent over time because natural selection favored strains that did not immediately kill the rabbit hosts, enhancing the likelihood of spreading and infecting other rabbits.D. None of the above is a true statement.arrow_forwardSuppose that a time machine allows you to go back in time (and to travel to Australia), and you have collected rabbits and Myxoma from the years 1955 and 1980. Once you are back in the twenty-first century, you infect both sets of rabbits with both sets of Myxoma viruses. The most likely result will be (1) that the rabbits from 1955 injected with the 1955 virus will have a _______ survival rate than those same rabbits injected with the 1980 virus; and (2) that the rabbits from 1955 injected with the 1980 virus will have a _______ survival rate than rabbits from 1980 injected with the 1980 virus. A. lower; lower B. lower; higher C. higher; lower D. higher; higher E. the survival rates will be the same in experiments (1) and (2)arrow_forwardDoes an insect disease vector like a mosquito have to intake blood to transmit a pathogen to a host?
