Explanation of Solution

Melt-down can be defined as accidental melting of the core of a nuclear reactor. When failure of cooling system occurs heat generated by a nuclear reactor exceeds the heat removed by the cooling systems. As a result temperatures rises enough to melt the reactor core.

On overheating a light water nuclear reactor core, the hot molten materials may increase the water’s temperature which results in steam explosion that damages the containment structure.

Conclusion

Steam explosion can occur due to overeating of reactor core.
