BIO Signals in nerve cells stimulate muscles The input end of a human nerve cell is connected to an output end by a long, thin, cylindrical axon. A signal at the input end is caused by a stretch sensor, a temperature sensor, contact with another cell or nerve, or some other stimulus. At the output end, the nerve signal can stimulate a muscle cell to perform a function (to contract provide information to the brain etc).
The axon of a so-called unmyelinated human nerve cell has a radius of
When an external source stimulates the input end of the nerve cell so the potential inside reaches about -50 mV, gates or channels in the membrane walls near that input open and sodium ions rush into the axon. This simulates neighboring gates to swing open and sodium ions rush into the axon farther along. This disturbance quickly travels along the axon—a nerve impulse The potential across the inside of the membrane changes in

- The speed of propagation of the action potential (an electrical signal) in a nerve cell depends (inversely) on the diameter of the axon (nerve fiber). If the nerve cell connecting the spinal cord to your feet is 1.1 m long, and the nerve impulse speed is 18 m/s, how long does it take for the nerve signal to travel this distance?arrow_forwardIntegrated Concepts Use the ECG in Figure 20.34 to determine the heart rate in beats per minute assuming a constant time between beats. Figure 20.34 A lead II ECG with corresponding arterial blood pressure. The QRS complex is created by the depolarization and contraction of the ventricles and is followed shortly by the maximum or systolic blood pressure. See text for further description.arrow_forwardItem 13 Cell Membranes and Dielectrics Many cells in the body have a cell membrane whose inner and outer surfaces carry opposite charges, just like the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor. Suppose a typical cell membrane has a thickness of 8.5x109 m, and its inner and outer surfaces carry charge densities of -6.4×10-4 C/m² and +6.4×10-4 C/m², respectively. In addition, assume that the material in the cell membrane has a dielectric constant of 5.4. - To measure signal propagation in a nerve in the arm, the nerve is triggered near the armpit. The peak of the action potential is measured at the elbow and then, 4.0 ms later, 24 cm away from the elbow at the wrist.a. What is the speed of propagation along this nerve?b. A determination of the speed made by measuring the time between the application of a stimulus at the armpit and the peak of an action potential at the elbow or the wrist would be inaccurate. Explain the problem with this approach, and why the noted technique is preferable.arrow_forward2. A simplified model of an axon based on a simple RC circuit is shown below. This is celebrated to raise public awareness on the different causes, effects, and dangers of fire in every household. One of the main causes of fire in the country is faulty electrical wiring. Faulty electrical wiring occurs when your electrical wires are overloaded, slack, or cut along electrical lines. Electrical wiring in houses and buildings includes a circuit breaker a device that protects a circuit from faulty electrical connection. It operates to detect the fault and cuts off the supply of current in case there is a problem in the circuit connection. Without a circuit breaker, nothing will detect circuit breaks that would melt electrical insulation and in worst cases, cause a fire. Too much added load in the circuit may exceed allowable rated circuit load which can cause the circuit breaker to shut off the circuit. Overloading is a common faulty wiring problem that poses hazard to household and building…arrow_forward
