Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for sea water corrodes iron faster than normal water should be explained.
Concept introduction:
Standard electrode potential:
The tendency of species, which is oxidized or reduced to gain or loss of electrons in the half cell reactions in standard state is known as standard electrode potential.
The tendency of species, which is oxidized to gain electron in the reduction half cell reaction in standard state is known as standard reduction potential.
The standard reduction potential is high means the species get reduces faster than lower standard reduction potential containing species therefore, the than lower standard reduction potential containing species is oxidised by higher standard reduction potential species.

- Aluminum (E Al 3+/Al=2.07V) is more easily oxidized than iron (E Fe 3+/Fe=2.07V), and yet when both are exposed to the environment, untreated aluminum has very good corrosion resistance while the corrosion resistance of untreated iron is poor. Explain this observation.arrow_forwardWhen balancing equations in Chapter 3, we did not mention that reactions must be charge balanced as well as mass balanced. What do charge balanced and mass balanced mean? How are redox equations charge balanced?arrow_forwardSubstances A2, B2, and C2 can all act as oxidizing agents. In solution, A2 is green, B2 is yellow, and C2 is red. In the reactions in which they participate, they are reduced to A, B, and C ions, all of which are colorless. When a solution of C2 is mixed with one containing B ions, the color changes from red to yellow. Which species is oxidized? __________ Which is reduced? __________ When a solution of C2 is mixed with one containing A ions, the color remains red. Is C2 a better oxidizing agent than A2? __________ Is C2 a better oxidizing agent than B2? __________ Arrange A2, B2, and C2 in order of increasing strength as an oxidizing agent. ___________________ _______________ ______________ weakest oxidizing agentstrongest oxidizing agentarrow_forward
