Explanation of Solution

Electrolysis is the process of the decomposition of electrolytes or ionic compounds into ions produced by passing an electric current through a solution to cause a chemical change.

The changes produced by electrolysis are chemical in nature.

An example of electrolysis is the decomposition of a sodium chloride solution. Sodium chloride produced sodium ions and chloride ions in the solution. When an electric current passes through the NaCl solution, sodium is deposited at cathode and chlorine gas at the anode. This is a chemical change because NaCl changes to two completely different substances.
