Answer to Problem 22A

In a given figure, component can be separated by the boiling and condensation process. This is a physical method of separation. The separation of the components of a mixture by distillation represent a physical change.

Explanation of Solution

In other words, a mixture of two liquid is separated by the distillation process. The separation technique is based on the boiling point of the liquids. The liquid with lower the boiling point start boils first and condensed out, and then other one is separated. This technique is used for the purification of the solution. The process of distillation depicted in the given figure-

  • The solution is heated to boil the water.
  • The water vapor is then cooled so that condenses back to the liquid state and then collected.
  • After the water is vaporized completely from the sample, pure salt remains.

The nature of any substance is explained by their chemical properties and physical properties. A physical property describes the physical changes of a substance. Physical change is a temporary change; it is a reversible change. According to this, the given process consists of physical changes.

Conclusion

Distillation method is used for the separation of a mixture.
