Concept explainers
For Problems 26–31, consider a diploid cell that contains three pairs of chromosomes designated AA, BB, and CC. Each pair contains a maternal and a paternal member (e.g., Am and Ap). Using these designations, demonstrate your understanding of mitosis and meiosis by drawing chromatid combinations as requested.Be sure to indicate when chromatids are paired as a result of replication and/or synapsis. You may wish to use a large piece of brown manila wrapping paper or a cut-up paper grocery bag for this project and to work in partnership with another student. We recommend cooperative learning as an efficacious way to develop the skills you will need for solving the problems presented throughout this text.
In mitosis, what chromatid combination(s) will be present during metaphase? What combination(s) will be present at each pole at the completion of anaphase?

EBK ESSENTIALS OF GENETICS
- In a turtle species, a diploid cell in the G1 phase of the cell cycle contains 22 picograms of DNA (picogram is a measure of the total mass of the DNA present). How much DNA is present in a cell of the same species at prophase II of meiosis (prophase of the second meiotic division)?arrow_forwardThe garden pea (Pisum sativum) is normally a diploid and has 7 chromosomes in one set (in other words, n = 7). Use this information to answer the following questions: a. How many centromeres would be in a cell of a tetraploid pea plant? ______ b. How many total chromatids would be in a cell of a tetraploid pea plant in metaphase of mitosis? _______ c. How many total chromosomes would be in a cell of a pea plant that is monosomic for a single chromosome?arrow_forwardMitotic nondisjunction can occur, particularly in tumor cells. Assume a single nondisjunction event involving the X chromosome occurs in a cell undergoing mitosis in a human female. First, consider the daughter cell with the smaller number of chromosomes: How many total chromosomes will this cell have? How many X chromosomes will this cell have? Next, consider the daughter cell with the larger number of chromosomes: How many total chromosomes will this cell have? How many X chromosomes will this cell have?arrow_forward

Such cooperative learning may be a useful approach as you solve problems throughout the text. Draw all possible combinations of chromatids during anaphase II in meiosis.arrow_forwardThis is a three part question: Mitosis and meiosis are both processes of eukaryotic cell division, with the same names used to describe different stags. a. What are the significant cellular and chromosomal events that occur during each stage of mitosis? b. What are the similarities and differences between the events that occur during each stage of mitosis and the corresponding stage of meiosis I? c. What are the similarities and differences between the events that occur during each stage of mitosis and the corresponding stage of meiosis II?arrow_forwardillustrate and briefly describe the alignment, pairing, and disjunction ofsister chromatids during mitosis. Include the molecular complexes cohesin and shugoshin and the enzyme separase.arrow_forward
- Mitosis DrawingIn this assignment you will track and draw the chromosomes of a diploid organism through all the stages of mitosis. Make sure to draw the alleles for genes A and B on the chromatids in every stage. For mitosis, remember that many events are going on in the cell that are relevant besides just the movement of chromosomes, so please fill in the cell with pertinent structures such as centrioles and spindles.arrow_forwardAssume that the diploid number of a certain species is four chromosomes, two large and two small (2n=4). a) Of the following figures, which represents a 3n (triploid) cell in mitotic metaphase? b) For each of the wrong answers from part (a) above, explain briefly why it cannot represent a triploid cell in mitotic metaphase.arrow_forwardWhat is the final result of mitosis in a human A) nearly genetically identical 2n somatic cells B) genetically different 2n somatic cells C) nearly genetically identical 1n somatic cells D) genetically identical 2n gamete cells Which of the following statements is TRUE? A) A single, replicated chromosome with sister chromatids has two centromeres. B) A single, unreplicated chromosome has two DNA molecules. C) Sister chromatids from a single chromosome are connected at the centromere. D) Homologous chromosomes are connected at the centromere. The first gap in the cell cycle (G1) corresponds to _____. A) normal growth and cell function B) the phase in which DNA is being replicated C) the beginning of mitosis D) the phase between DNA replication and the M phase In a diploid cell from a specific species has 5 chromosome pairs, how many sister chromatids will be found in a nucleus at prophase of mitosis? (Draw it!) A) 5 B) 10 C) 20 D) 40 Consider a cell from the species above.…arrow_forward

What combination(s) will be present at each pole at the completion of anaphase?arrow_forwardDiscuss Concepts Eukaryotic chromosomes can be labeled by exposing cells to radioactive thymidine during the S phase of interphase. If cells are exposed to radioactive thymidine during the S phase, would you expect both or only one of the sister chromatids of a duplicated chromosome to be labeled at metaphase of the following mitosis (see Section 10.2)?arrow_forwardSomatic cells of chimpanzees contain 48 chromosomes. During metaphase I of meiosis, a chimpanzee cell will contain ____ chromosomes, ______ chromatids, and _______ bivalents. Fill in each blank with the appropriate number (e.g., 48).arrow_forward
