Interpretation:

It should be described that the experimental basis for believing that the nucleus occupies a very small fraction of the volume of the atom.

Concept introduction:

  • Atom is the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.
  • Atom contains positively charged proton, negatively charged electron and neutrons without any charge.  Proton and neutron collectively referred as nucleons those are present inside of the nucleus.
  • According with the Rutherford’s α- particle scattering experiment, Rutherford bombarded gold foil with α- particles and most of them passed through the foil, whereas a small proportion were deflected or reflected.  Thus most of the atom must be empty space through which the α- particles could pass without encountering any obstructions.
