There are generally four types of fire extinguishers -

  1. Type A
  2. Type B
  3. Type C
  4. Type D

Each of the fire extinguishers is suitable for a specific type of fire.

Type A extinguishers are suitable for the combustible solids (articles that burn) such as clothes, paper and wood. Green coloured triangular symbol is made on the fire extinguisher with the letter A to label the type A fire extinguishers.

Type B extinguishers are suitable for combustible liquids like thinners, gas, oil, etc...
