Textbook Problem

Consider aqueous solutions of the following coordination compounds: Co(NH3)6I3, Pt(NH3)4I4, Na2PtI6, and Cr(NH3)4I3. If aqueous AgNO3 is added to separate beakers containing solutions of each coordination compound, how mans moles of AgI will precipitate per mole of transition metal present? Assume that each transition metal ion forms an octahedral complex.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of moles of AgI precipitated by the following co-ordination compounds have to be determined –

Co(NH3)6I3, Pt(NH3)4I4, Na2PtI6 and Cr(NH3)4I3

Concept introduction:

The formation of solid in a solution by a chemical reaction is known as precipitation.

Explanation

When AgNO3 is added to Co(NH3)6I3 , complex ion [Co(NH3)6]3+ will be produced and AgI will precipitate out. The balanced reaction is,

Co(NH3)6I3(aq)+3AgNO3(aq)[Co(NH3)6]3+(aq)+3AgI(s)+3NO3(aq)

It is clear from the above reaction, that three moles of AgI will precipitate out.

When AgNO3 is added to Pt(NH3)4I4 , complex ion [Pt(NH3)4I2]2+ will be produced and AgI will precipitate out. The balanced reaction is,

Pt(NH3)4I4(aq)+2AgNO3(aq)[Pt(NH3)4I2]2+(aq)+2AgIȀ
