Chapter 22, Problem 10TYR
Summary Introduction
Introduction:
Breathing, also known as respiration is an automatic and involuntary process. Breathing involves the supply of oxygen to the body and the removal of carbon dioxide from the body. The process of breathing has two stages inhalation stage and exhalation. The respiratory center, namely the medulla controls the rhythm and rate of respiration with the help of dorsal and a ventral respiratory group of neurons.

a. atmospheric pressure is greater than the pressure found inside the lungs (alveoli)
b. atmospheric pressure is less than the pressure found inside the lungs
c. the intrapleural pressure is greater than the pressure found in the atmosphere
d. the atmospheric pressure is equal to the pressure found inside the lungs
How would paralysis of the diaphragm alter inspiration? a. It would prevent contraction of the intercostal muscles. b. It would prevent inhalation because the intrapleural pressure would not change. c. It would decrease the intrapleural pressure and allow more air to enter the lungs. d. It would slow expiration because the lung would not relax.
