The respiratory system plays a key role in homeostasis of blood pH.  The pH is defined as the negative logarithm of hydrogen ion concentration. The level of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the blood is an essential factor for regulation of blood pH. The imbalances of pH occurring because of any alteration in CO2 production and elimination in the blood, is called as respiratory acidosis and alkalosis.
