Question
Chapter 22, Problem 2WIO
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The way in which a biologist could determine the origin of thorns, spines, and tendrils using his or her knowledge.
Concept introduction:
There are various parts of a plant like leaves, stems, branches thorns, tendrils and many more. Stems have some modifications like the underground stem-like bulb, runner, tendrils and some others. Similarly leaves also show some modifications like spines, scales. They are modified as per the necessity of plants. Mostly they are modified in order to protect themselves from predators or to reduce water loss or for support or some other functions.

What is the type of stem do shame plant and coconut tree have, are they tendrils, thorns, bulbils, cladodes, phylloclade, or hooks? Pick one for each plant.
What sorts of anatomical contrasts would you expect between the upper and lower surfaces of a floating leaf plant like water lily?
Many scientific words are also ordinary English words. If you read that a plant has a bulb or tuber, can you always be certain exactly what the botanical structure is?
