Chapter 22, Problem 3WIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The cause for the stoppage of growth of one out of the two plants grown on identical soil and providing them water for the same amount at the same time interval.

Concept introduction:

Growth is a process in which an organism increases in shape, size and in overall body structure and function and length. Growth in plants is a feature that continues for a very long time. It occurs at a very rapid rate and that is the reason for most of the plants being tall. The growth of a plant depends on many factors like the sunlight, nutrients, genetic factors, physiological conditions like temperature of the surrounding, pH (potential of hydrogen) and some others.

A scientist is studying the effect a new fertilizer has on root growth on bean seedlings. Three groups of plants are grown in the same location in a greenhouse, each receiving the same amount of sunlight and water every day. The scientist measures the length of the roots for each plant every day. The scientist then calculates the mean for each group for five days. The results are shown in the following table. Fertilizer Experiment Data Table Which are the controlled variables in this experiment? Select all that apply. Growers often wrap potted plants in plastic sleeves prior to shipping. If plants remain in these sleeves too long, their leaves curl and fall off. Imagine you are working at a garden center and have been asked to make a presentation to a local garden club.Question: Explain the processes that may cause the leaves to drop and fall.
Imagine an experiment where I am testing the effects of salt on the growth of corn plants. I set up several treatments where some plants get no salt, some are watered with a 0.05% salt solution, and some are watered with a 0.1% salt solution.  I use the same species of plants, the same soil, and the same total amounts of water in my experiment.  Every other day I record the height of the plants in cm.  What is the independent variable in my experiment?   What is the dependent variable in my experiment?   What is the control treatment in my experiment?   What are three controlled variables in my experiment?
