Chapter 22, Problem 4AL
Summary Introduction

Thiobacillus is called colorless sulfur bacteria because sulfur-containing compounds are used as electron and energy sources. They are sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Whereas Desulfovibrio is sulfate or sulfur reducing bacteria and during anaerobic respiration, they reduce sulfate or elemental sulfur to hydrogen sulfide.

Students have asked these similar questions
For Escherichia coli, why is more energy released in aerobicrespiration than during NO3- reduction?
Why is the enzyme hydrogenase useful to Desulfovibrioeven when it is not grown on H2 as electron donor?
Which of the following statements is false?   A. Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria may form hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as a product of the oxidation.   B. Dissimilatory reduction of metals such as Fe3+ to Fe2+ represents anaerobic respiration.   C. The nitrification reactions carried out by certain bacteria would be considered lithotrophy.   D. Denitrification reactions would be considered anaerobic respiration.
