Both chickenpox and shingles are caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV). In appearance, this virus is identical to herpesviruses and is double-stranded (ds) DNA virus (deoxyribonucleic acid). An individual who has been infected by chickenpox is more prone to develop shingles later in life if the virus is reactivated.
