Chapter 2.22, Problem 18P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The four compounds listed are to be arranged in the order of decreasing heat of combustion.

Concept introduction:

Heat of combustion depends primarily on the number of carbons in the alkane – more the number of carbons, higher the heat of combustion.

Among isomeric hydrocarbons, the heat of combustion depends on the stability of the isomer. The more branched the isomer, more stable it is and lower is its heat of combustion.

The molar heat of combustion of gaseous cyclopropane is -2089 Kj/mol, that for gaseous cyclopentene is -3317 Kj/mol. Calculate the heat of combustion per CH2 group in the two cases and account for the difference
Draw an enthalpy diagram for the formation of propane
Given that there are three possible cis-dimethylcyclohexanes, if the same amount of these compounds were each combusted in a calorimeter, which one pf the three would be expected to release the least amount of heat?
