Chapter 2, Problem 51DSP
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The alkane which is expected to give two constitutionally isomeric alcohols on oxidation is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The fungus Pseudomonas oleovorans oxidizes the CH3 groups at the end of the carbon chain faster than the CH3 branch and faster than the CH2 and CH units within the chain and convert the alkane to a corresponding alcohol.

Oxidation of these terminal methyl groups converts them to the corresponding -CH2OH groups.

The tsetse fly Glossina morsitans is a large biting fly foundin regions of Africa. They carry sleeping sickness, a deadlydisease caused by a parasitic protozoan. The pheromonesecreted by the tsetse fly contains four straight-chain alkanes:2-methylheptadecane (C18H38), 17,21-dimethylheptatriacontane (C39H80), 15,19-dimethylheptatriacontane (C39H80), and15,19,23-trimethylheptatriacontane (C40H82). Because thispheromone works by smell over long distances, it has proveduseful as an agent to control tsetse fly populations.a. Draw the line formula for each of these alkanes.b. Calculate the molar mass of each of these alkanes.
Draw the structure and name of all possible organic compound 1) The reaction of cyclopropane with 2 moles of bromine in the presence of UV light 2) All isomers for a 5 carbon alkane containing one bromine
3 Ethers (general formula R—O—R,) have many important uses. Until recently, methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE, below) was used as an octane booster and fuel additive for gasoline. It increases the oxygen content of the fuel, which reduces CO emissions. MTBE is synthesized by the catalyzed reaction of 2-methylpropene with methanol.(a) Write a balanced equation for the synthesis of MTBE. (Hint: Alcohols add to alkenes similarly to the way water does.)
