Question
Chapter 22.2, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The role of geography in the evolution of the island fox.
Introduction:
The study of the geographic distribution of the extinct and the living species is known as biogeography. Natural geographic distribution of related species often shows patterns of past evolution. It is found that the continents and islands which are isolated have evolved their own distinct communities of plants and animals.

What evidence shows that the most recent common ancestor of chimpanzees and humans was much more arboreal than modern humans are? We spoke of paleoenvironmental processes that changed the ecological environmental conditions in Africa somewhere around 7 million years in Africa: which are they? How would have these processes might have selected for a less arboreal lifestyle in the human lineage? Why did the same changes not evolve in the chimpanzee lineage?
ACTIVITY 2
Patterns of Descent with Modification from Common Ancestors
1.Dog (Canis familiarizes) is a common pet at home. Using this species, create a diagram to show
patterns of descent with modification of dog from its common ancestor. Answers can be in a
form of drawing or word.
Refer to the example (The descent of modification or evolution of cat)

what is the difference between a gene tree and a species tree? Explain in your own words how it is possible for gorillas and humans to share a genetic trait (such as a retroviral insertion) that chimpanzees do not share, if chimpanzees and humans are really each other's closest relatives. Given the lack of agreement between gene trees and species trees, how is it possible to reconstruct the true species tree?
