Chapter 23, Problem 10RQ
Summary Introduction

To review:

Some chemical barriers to infection.

Introduction:

The human body has physical, chemical, and cellular barriers to prevent invasion by potentially harmful microorganisms. The chemical barriers attack the pathogens on the outer surface of the body, at the opening, and on the inner body lining. The chemicals form adverse conditions for the growth of pathogens. This adverse environment is sustained by different factors and is also boosted by the production of specific substances that hinder the growth of harmful bacteria.
