Concept introduction:

The term hydrolysis refers to a chemical reaction that takes place when water ruptures one or more chemical bonds. In the case of biological hydrolysis, the cleavage of biomolecules takes place in such a way that the larger molecules and break down into smaller ones.

Catabolism of the food takes place via a number of biochemical pathways. Some reactions may release energy while some reactions are caused due to the absorption of energy. The energy which is released by one reaction is used to derive some other reactions.
