Concept explainers
Interpretation: To identify the location in the mitochondria where seven out of the eight reactions of the citric acid cycle take place.
Concept introduction: Citric acid cycle includes the reactions in which the acetyl part of acetyl CoA is oxidized and leads to the formation of carbon dioxide and
Mitochondrion consists of an outer and inner membrane. The inner membrane has multifold and is highly impermeable and selective for some substance. The outer membrane is not multifolded and is not highly impermeable like an inner membrane.
The highly selective nature of inner membrane causes the mitochondrion to divide into two compartments: matrix and inner membrane space.

Bundle: General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, 7th + OWLv2 Quick Prep for General Chemistry, 4 terms (24 months) Printed Access Card
- How many ATP, NADH, and FADH2 are produced by one molecule of glucose proceeding through the citric acid cycle?arrow_forwardEach of the cytochromes in the mitochondrion contains prosthetic groups. What is a prosthetic group? Which type of prosthetic group is associated with the cytochromes?arrow_forwardWhat are the final products of the citric acid cycle (including the transitional phase) for the breakdown of 1 glucose molecule?arrow_forward
- What reaction serves to link glycolysis and the citric acid cycle, and what is the enzyme that catalyzes the reaction?arrow_forwardHow many carbons from the original glucose molecule enter each round of the citric acid cycle?arrow_forwardIn what part of the cell does the citric acid cycle take place? Does this differ from the part of the cell where glycolysis occurs?arrow_forward
- Two molecules of what compound are produced by glycolysis? Does this molecule enter the citric acid cycle?arrow_forwardThe enzymes used in the regulation of chemical reactions during the citric acid cycle are synthesized via which of the following pathways? Choose from the following: (A) ribosomes / mRNA attached to the ribosomal endoplasmic reticulum (B) free or polyribosomes associated with mRNAarrow_forwardDoes any step of the citric acid cycle directly produce ATP? Explain.arrow_forward
- What substances enter the citric acid cycle, and what substances leave it? Why is it called a cycle?arrow_forwardYou are carrying out an experiment in the lab to study the citric acid cycle. To do this, you add 14C-labeled pyruvate at carbon 3 (this is the methyl carbon) to metabolically active mitochondria. Based on your knowledge of the citric acid cycle, what is the location of the 14C-label in oxaloacetate after one turn of the cycle? How many turns of the cycle are required to release all of the the14C-label as CO2? Be sure to justify your answers using a thorough description, as your answer does not need to include any drawings of the intermediates (but, feel free to include one if you wish).arrow_forwardThe citric acid cycle generates NADH and FADH2, which are then used in the process of oxidative phosphorylation to make ATP. If the citric acid cycle (which does not use oxygen) and oxidative phosphorylation are separate processes, as they are, then why is it that the citric acid cycle stops almost immediately when O2 is removed?arrow_forward
