Concept explainers
Interpretation: To identify the location of the one step that does not occur in the mitochondria matrix out of the eight steps of the citric acid cycle.
Concept introduction: Citric acid cycle includes the reactions in which the acetyl part of acetyl CoA is oxidized and leads to the formation of carbon dioxide and
Mitochondrion consists of an outer and inner membrane. The inner membrane has multifold and is highly impermeable and selective for some substance. The outer membrane is not multifolded and is not highly impermeable like an inner membrane.
The highly selective nature of inner membrane causes the mitochondrion to divide into two compartments: matrix and inner membrane space.

- Which reactions of the citric acid cycle transfer energy as FADH2?arrow_forwarda) Describe the three irreversible reactions of the Citric Acid Cycle. Ensure to indicate their purpose/role, the substrates and products, the enzyme involved, and any significant features of the reaction. b) Why are these reactions considered irreversible (why can't they be reversed)? c) Using one of the reactions as an example, explain why it is important for the cell that the reaction is irreversible.arrow_forwardEach of the cytochromes in the mitochondrion contains prosthetic groups. What is a prosthetic group? Which type of prosthetic group is associated with the cytochromes?arrow_forward
- why is the citric acid cycle is located in close cellular proximity to the electron transport chain?arrow_forwardList four different products of citric acid cycle.arrow_forward|a) Explain why the citric acid cycle is considered to be the center of cellular metabolism. b) What are the substrates and products corresponding to one turn of the citric acid cycle? (no need for enzymes) c) Which steps of the citric acid cycle release CO2 as a product? Which steps produce NADH or FADH2? Which step produces GTP? d) How much ATP can be generated from glucose when the citric acid cycle is operating?arrow_forward
- Which reaction in the citric acid cycle is most analogous to the oxidative decarboxylation of 6- phosphogluconate to ribulose 5-phosphate? What kind of enzymebound intermediate is formed in both reactions?arrow_forwardWhy is the citric acid cycle a cycle?arrow_forwarda) What carbon-containing molecule exits the citric acid cycle? Why doesn’t your body capture the carbon-containing molecule you identified in part (a) and use that molecule to build new sugars and fats? Explain your answer. You have just created a new enzyme that will make the citric acid cycle more efficient! Instead of the citric acid cycle taking 8 steps, all of the bonds between the carbon atoms will be broken in only one step! Is this a good idea? Explain your answer.arrow_forward
- What would happen to the citric acid cycle if NADH and FADH2 were not reoxidized?arrow_forwardThe enzymes used in the regulation of chemical reactions during the citric acid cycle are synthesized via which of the following pathways? Choose from the following: (A) ribosomes / mRNA attached to the ribosomal endoplasmic reticulum (B) free or polyribosomes associated with mRNAarrow_forwardWhat substances enter the citric acid cycle, and what substances leave it? Why is it called a cycle?arrow_forward
