Kyle Boulard, a 35-year-old male, is believed to be one of the primary causes of the a bus accident on Route 91. Passengers on the bus reported that Mr. Boulard was clearly intoxicated when he boarded the bus. According to these reports, Mr. Boulard behaved erratically, appeared disoriented, and left his seat and staggered down the aisle. Just prior to the accident, he had stumbled into the driver’s compartment. Paramedics found Mr. Boulard in a disoriented state when they arrived on the scene, but noted only minor injuries. A “fruity acetone combined with alcohol” smell was noted on his breath. What follows is a summary of the notable test results:
General | Blood | Urine |
BP: 95/58 | pH: 7.1 | Odor: “fruity acetone” |
HR: 110 | Glucose: 345 mg/dl | pH: 4.3 |
Ketone bodies: 22 mg/dl | Glucose: strongly positive | |
Blood alcohol: 110 mg/dl |
The production of large amounts of ketone bodies is often seen when glucose is not readily available as an energy source (e.g., in starvation). In Mr. Boulard’s case, large amounts of glucose are in the blood. Explain why his body is producing

- Why is daily ingestion of vitamin C more critical than daily ingestion of vitamin A?arrow_forwardWould altering the unsaturated:saturated fatty acid ratio in tissues be easier to accomplish in ruminants or non-ruminants? Explainarrow_forwardAn adult animal consumed 50 kcal of food. 5 kcal have been excreted in urine and feces. Where did the remaining 45 kcal eventually go?arrow_forward
- Explain the importance of thermoregulation in the body?arrow_forwardJennie, an 18-year-old girl suffers from diarrhea whenever she is drinking/eating milk or dairy products. What can be the metabolic reason why she is experiencing this? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardIf you fed an experimental animal (a mammal) a special food that consisted of all 20 amino acids, glucose and a wide variety of fatty acids, along with all needed vitamins and minerals, how would its digestive system handle this food? What would be normal and what, if anything, would be abnormal about its food processing? Is it likely to be adequately nourished?arrow_forward
- A person has undergone fasting. What type of feedback mechanism is exhibited by his body to sustain his blood sugar and for it not to drop in critical level even though he is not consuming enough carbohydrates to sustain his normal blood sugar level?arrow_forwardThomas is challenged by his friends to consume a large 1 Kg steak. While consuming the steak, he also consumes a fair amount of Cola. An hour after he completed the challenge, a blood sample is taken from which his average amino acid and glucose concentration is determined. His results show that his glucose concentration is above normal but his amino acid concentration is normal. Provide an explanation as to why his amino acid concentrations are normal and not also elevated even though he consumed a 1 Kg steak.arrow_forwardDuring a study of digestion, a health 25-year-old woman volunteers to eat a large meal consisting of turkey dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes peas and rolls. She then has pecan pie and coffee. Gastric studies show an immediate response in this subject with the secretion of acid and pepsinogen. In addition toacetylcholine and gastrin which of the following substances is necessary for maximal acid secretion by the stomach in this woman?A) CholecystokininB) EnterokinaseC) HistamineD) PepsinogenE) Secretinarrow_forward
- How would omission of a meal affect blood glucose levels andinsulin balance?arrow_forwardA well-trained athlete is found to have a moderately increased plasma total cholesterol concentration. What additional measurements would you advise this person to take in order to gain a better understanding of the importance of the increased cholesterol? Hint: Think about the forms in which cholesterol exists in the blood.arrow_forwardAt high lipid intake but low CHO intake, the body adjusts to a different pathway. Explain in details.arrow_forward
