The carbon dioxide in the blood is transported in 3 forms, as carbonate ion, in bound form with protein (hemoglobin) and in dissolved form in the blood. The carbon dioxide is mainly transported in the form of bicarbonate ions (HCO3-). The chloride shift is the influx of chloride ions as a replacement of bicarbonate ions.
