To describe:
The three effects caused by binding of hydrogen ion to the hemoglobin.
Introduction:
The carbon dioxide in the blood is transported in 3 forms, as carbonate ion, in bound form with protein (hemoglobin) and in dissolved form in the blood. The carbon dioxide is mainly transported in the form of bicarbonate ions (HCO3-). Removing the HCO3- ions from the red blood cells promotes the transport of carbon dioxide. The decrease in the HCO3- concentration causes the more CO2 to combine with water to produce HCO3- and H+. The elevated concentration of hydrogen ions decreases the pH.
