Concept introduction:
Isomers two or more chemical compounds or species whose chemical formula is the same, but they vary in one different property.
Coordination isomers are those coordination compounds with the same overall formula, but their not the same exact composition. It implies that there is a distinctive “coordination sphere” around the cation. These isomers crop up when an anion acting asa ligand in one compound functions as a counter anion in the other and vice versa.
An example of a pair of coordination isomers would be
When any complex is named, the ligands are named foremost, in the alphabetical order, and the metal atom or ion is named afterward. Conversely, in the chemical formula, the metal atom or ion is marked before the ligands.

- Four different octahedral chromium coordination compounds exist that all have the same oxidation state for chromium and have H2O and Cl as the ligands and counterions. When 1 mole of each of the four compounds is dissolved in water, how many moles of silver chloride will precipitate upon addition of excess AgNO3?arrow_forward(a) Name this coordination compound: [Ag(NH3)2]NO3. (b) Write the formula of pentaaquaisothiocyanatoiron(III) chloride.arrow_forwardExperiments show that K4[Cr(CN)6] is paramagnetic and has two unpaired electrons. The related complex K4[Cr(SCN)6] is paramagnetic and has four unpaired electrons. Account for the magnetism of each compound using the ligand field model. Predict where the SCN ion occurs in the spectro-chemical series relative to CN.arrow_forward
