Textbook Problem

Draw the structural formula for the tetranucleotide AUGC.

Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The structural formula for the tetranucleotide AUGC has to be drawn.

Concept introduction: Carbohydrates are defined as the polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone or any compound that can be hydrolyzed to them. Deoxyribose sugar and ribose sugar are monosaccharide sugar. they are also called pentose sugar as they contain five carbon atoms and forms a five-membered ring structure - 4 carbon atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

There are five nitrogenous bases adenine, guanine, thymine, cytosine and uracil. A sugar unit attached to a base form a nucleoside unit. A nucleoside unit attached to a phosphate group together form a nucleotide unit. They are the main building block of nucleic acids DNA and RNA. Nucleotide units form the backbone of the nucleic acids DNA and RNA.

In DNA the bases present are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T) In RNA the bases present are adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and uracil (U).

Explanation

The given tetranucleotide AUGC sequence contains adenine, uracil, guanine and cytosine base pairs. Since the tetranucleotide contains uracil base pair which forms the backbone of RNA so the sugar unit attached must be ribose sugar. A sugar unit attached to base and phosphate group is called a nucleotide. Two nucleotide units are joined together by phosphodiester group. 3' position of one sugar unit is attached to the 5' position of another sugar unit by a phosphodiester group
