Textbook Problem

Sketch a section of a phospholipid bilayer in which you let a circle represent the polar head group and curvy lines represent the hydrocarbon tails. Label the regions of the bilayer as being polar or nonpolar.

Interpretation Introduction

A section of a phospholipid bilayer and label the region of

bilayer as polar and nonpolar has to be sketched.

Concept introduction: Phospholipid bilayer is made up of two layers of lipid molecules mainly phospholipid. These are permeable to water-soluble molecules and impermeable to the ions and thus helps to regulate the pH and salt concentration by maintaining the transportation across it.

The phospholipid layer is made up of phosphoglyceride molecules each having one polar phosphate group referred to as polar head and long fatty acid hydrocarbon chain attached to the polar head called the tail.

The polar head is hydrophilic and the tail part is hydrophobic in nature thus the bilayer lipid arrange in such a way so that the hydrophilic polar head point outwards or towards the aqueous environment and the hydrophobic tail points inwards or away from the aqueous environment.

The whole model of the lipid bilayer is explained by the fluid mosaic model...
