It should be compare fats and carbohydrates as energy sources in terms of the amount of energy released per mole, and account for the observed energy difference.

Concept introduction:

• The amount of ATP obtained from the substance depends on the length of the carbon chain.
• Fatty acids are aliphatic mono-carboxylic acids that are mostly obtained from the hydrolysis of natural fats and oils. They have a general formula $R-{\left(C{H}_2\right)}_n-COOH$, n is mostly an even number of carbon atoms (4 to 20) with a few exceptions that have an odd number.
• Carbohydrates are composed of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in a $1:2:1$ empirical ratio.
• The general empirical formula for a carbohydrate is $C{H}_{2}O$. Carbohydrates provide our cells with fuel to perform all cellular activities.
