Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The lipoproteins which transport exogenous and endogenous lipids should be determined from the given lipoproteins.
Concept introduction:
Lipids are
Lipoproteins are a biochemical assembly that contains both proteins and lipids.
Chylomicrons are lipoprotein particles that consist of triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol and proteins. They transport dietary lipids from the intestines to other locations in the body.
The endogenous lipid transport system conveys lipid from liver to peripheral tissues and back to the liver.

- Chemically, Olestra is made of a six-carbon backbone and six fatty acid attachments. No nutrients are absorbed or processed by Olestra. In order to understand why olestra is not absorbed, you must first explain why. (b) How can olestra intake affect fat-soluble vitamin absorption?arrow_forwardHow does a ketogenic diet decrease the level of urea in obese patients and increase the level of creatine in obese patients? (explain on a molecular level)arrow_forwardFatty acids and triglycerides are an important source of nutrition and a dense form of stored energy. Digestion of fats yields more energy per gram than digestion of carbohydrates. In the first step of fatty acid digestion, the carboxylic acid of a fatty acid is activated to a fatty acyl-CoA. This activation step A) requires the input of energy from ATP. B) requires the input of energy from NADH. C) releases energy which is captured in the form of ATP. D) releases energy which is captured in the form of NADH.arrow_forward
- Fatty acids are stored in adipose tissue, as triacylglycerol (TAG) forms. TAGs are degraded as glycerol and fatty acids where energy is required. Based on that knowledge explain: a) How these products are used in the adipose, liver, and other tissue? b)Why glycerol can not be metabolized in adipose tissue?arrow_forwardA. Energy is released in the process of lipid degradation. (i) Into which form is the fatty acid converted when it is transported across the inner membrane of mitochondria? (ii) Write an overall reaction for B-oxidation of a 22:0 fatty acid. (iii) Calculate the NET amount of ATP produced in (ii). Show your steps of calculation. B. Compare the mode transport of amino acids and fatty acids from the lumen of small intestine into the epithelial cells of villi. C. Briefly discuss why part of urea cycle takes place in mitochondria.arrow_forwardWhat is the role of each of the following lipoproteins in the transport of lipids? -VLDL -HDL -LDLarrow_forward
- Decide whether each of the following statements is true or false. If false, explain why.(a) The amino acid pool is found mainly in the liver.(b) Nitrogen-containing compounds can be stored in fatty tissue.(c) Some hormones and neurotransmitters are synthesized from amino acids.arrow_forwardIn the hydrolysis of lipids a 'pancreatin' solution is used. This is a mixture of pancreatic enzymes. These would include all of the following EXCEPT for Choose one from the following: (A) lipase (B) amylase (C) dipeptidase (D) trypsinogen (E) chymotrypsinarrow_forwardWhich of the following statements regarding the synthesis and metabolism of lipoprotein complexes are TRUE?1) pre-HDLs are synthesized only in the liver2) VLDLs are metabolized by lipoprotein lipase3) HDLs are produced as derivatives in VLDL metabolism4) a high serum level of LDL increases the risk of myocardial infarction5) HDLs carry cholesterol esters and clear up the excess of cholesterol from extrahepatic tissuesarrow_forward
- A 10-year old boy recently joined a soccer team and complains of muscle pain and lightheadedness after each of his last three games. Further testing identifies that he has a defect in his lipolysis pathway, specifically a mutation in the lipase that is phosphorylated in response fasting and exercise. (1) Which lipase is defective in this patient? (A) perilipin(B) adipose triglyceride lipase (C) hormone-sensitive lipase (D) monoacylglycerol lipase (E) protein kinase Aarrow_forwardWould altering the unsaturated:saturated fatty acid ratio in tissues be easier to accomplish in ruminants or non-ruminants? Explainarrow_forward"The following describe lipoprotein organization, classification & function, EXCEPT: " Each type of lipoprotein has a characteristic apoprotein necessary for the transport and metabolism of the lipid inside "Lipid content is less than protein thus, the higher the % TAG the less dense the lipoprotein" The amount of cholesterol and cholesteryl ester increases as lipoprotein density decreases "Chylomicrons and VLDL transport dietary and biosynthesized lipids to the peripheral tissues, respectively"arrow_forward
